A Social Experiment

Catherine White

Not your typical South African album, nonetheless certainly typically South African  This album is either bound to make you laugh or cry. Viewer discretion is advised… Satanic Dagga Orgy uses humour to address serious situations.

Satanic Dagga Orgy embraces the combination of an absurd yet brilliant genre. In the album called ‘Bromance’ you will experience a unique combination of punk, rock, country, and groove and funk music. The name of the band is as bodacious as the genre of music executed. The name these artists call themselves speaks as loud as the ‘Bromance’ EP. “For those who say change your name, I say change your mind,” says Bass Guitarist, Shaun Oliver. Let the music speak for itself.

If the exuberant musical explosion does not improve your mood, the satirical lyrics should at least make you chuckle. Having a good time is inevitable for this band… it is either contagious without fail or the opposite! Either way, a reaction to this album is inevitable.

Fueled by social and political inequalities, these musicians choose to be expressive through a daring ‘social experiment’ they call music. After having started the band solely for personal enjoyment, the band later decided, to generously share their boisterous art with the rest of the world.  Now every South African can indulge and laugh at obscure things they never saw the other side of.

Every song in this album is a fearless true story about the past, present and future. In their song called ‘Legalize It’, many benefits of marijuana are expressed. “All we ask is that you legalize it.” “It won’t be long before you legalize it”. Perhaps this album foresees the future as many South Africans celebrated a great victory on 31 March 2017, when it was announced that cultivating, utilizing and possessing dagga in South Africa is one step closer to being made legal. A great deal of marijuana supporters, including the Dagga Party, can resonate with the notion of this song. “The best of all, it is impossible to tax.”

“A scaly skin and a greedy smile. An unrepentant glimmer in his eyes.” Using music as a form of political and social protest, songs like “Mr. Crocodile” is a direct expression of South African Political Leaders and their greed. “Even the best of thieves get caught” “Hay, hay Mr. Crocodile time is running out. There’s a rumble in the jungle. Whispers will turn to shouts. Rising up to get you now, you better run in fear. It’s not blood we want it’s your crocodile tears.”The band clearly supports the notion of utilizing Dagga. Contradictory to what their name might suggest, they use dark comedy to satirise what they believe is the ridiculous assumption that: Dagga is Satanic. Hence the name: Satanic Dagga Orgy.

Direction and encouragement sweep through your soul as the music flows through your veins and you find your foot bouncing to the drums. “Coz anything were doing is fucking hard to do, and if you want this world to change well then it’s up to you.” It can’t get any more direct than number two on the EP: ‘Don’t be kak’. “Don’t be a poes, be lekker.” Written in December 2014 This song is about facing fears and overcoming obstacles, but also about not being a poes.

If unfiltered language and the truth offend you, then this album is not for you. If you appreciate the sincerity of expression through language and music, you might agree that this album deserve gold for spunk.

If you want to have a good time in an absurd country through an absurd platform, there is nothing that beats ‘Bromance’. How will you respond to this social experiment?
